Internet Radio PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bob Mathers
When personal computers began taking hold around the world in the mid-90’s, only the most foresighted folks saw a need in the future for internet radio. After all, there was no sense in investing time in broadcasting (streaming) on the internet to people who could not make it portable and take it with them. Then along came laptops. Followed by Wi-Fi. Then wireless. Now, internet radio can go anywhere. And with podcasting, anyone can download a show and listen to it on-demand at their convenience.

Many conventional radio veterans have moved into some sort of internet venture. This development dovetails with the erosion and even elimination of traditional formats like oldies radio in America. Internet radio stations also provide a forum for new releases which can’t get exposure (airplay) on terrestrial (see conventional) radio outlets.

The future of internet radio is not in doubt. What remains unseen however, is how effective the marketing, technology and interactive promotion will be to involve more computer users. The more said audience views internet radio as a personal entity, the more relevance internet radio will have to traditional radio users.
